"We’ll all go down babbling about some Rosebud or other"
Who wears hats now?: "[There’s] another problem about loss. Do I mean lost in the sense of something I once had and don’t any longer, or lost meaning missed out on altogether, as in: damn, they had the 17th century without me? Increasingly, I am pissed off in this second sense...
But nostalgia is a treacherous thing. It can make you teeter dangerously as you walk that thinnest of lines: on one side a clear-eyed assessment of how it was for all manner of people, on the other the pit of sentimentality. Merry Christmas everyone, and bless us one and all. The older I get, the less certain which side of the line I am on. Even less certain which side of the line I should be on. There’s something about nostalgia and its close cousin sentimentality that gives me the horrors, but also something that makes me suspect it needs a lot more serious attention than I’ve been prepared to give it."
Actually, it looks exactly like a starling on a scaffolding pole
Emin's flight of fancy: "To the uninitiated, it looks a bit like a starling perched on top of a scaffolding pole.
But it is actually Tracey Emin's first piece of public art... [featuring] a small bird perched on a four-metre bronze pole designed as a tribute to the city's famous, mythical Liver Bird. 'It vaguely resembles a swift,' said Emin yesterday as the sculpture was installed. 'But then it could be a starling.'"
The singer and guitarist, who fronted 80s rock art combo Orange Juice before enjoying solo success with the hit A Girl Like You, was taken ill on Sunday.
A statement from his management team said: 'Edwyn Collins suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on Sunday night and has been in hospital since, where doctors are trying to stabilise his condition. As soon as we will have more information we will let you know.'"
Amazon.com recomended the two items below for me, which is all fine and good. The strange thing is the red dot pattern. Was this planned? It's just too suspicious to be a coincidence. You win this round, Conor!
Bonus season mix! Winter 2005 features the mysterious Superimposers--they are mysterious because the interweb seems to lack any meaningful information on the band. Add to that the guitar compositions of Bibio and some random folksters and, finally, we have an aural accompaniment for drinking tea and reading the Sunday paper.

Granny D Hospitalized For Throat Surgery: "Doris 'Granny D' Haddock, one of the nation's most relentless voices for campaign finance reform, has been silenced by a surgery that could cost her her voice.
Haddock, who ran for the U.S. Senate last year and gained national attention by walking across the country to promote campaign finance reform, underwent surgery on her windpipe Thursday.
'She is strong, and a full recovery is expected, but the long-term prospects of whether she would regain use of her well-known voice is uncertain,' said family spokesman Dennis Burke."
iBook returned yesterday from the Apple spa in Texas feeling slightly lighter. Apparently the cause of the screen flickering was BAD RAM. Who knew? The offending RAM was returned in a pouch. (Christopher is kindly sending me some spare RAM since I am, afterall, economical). In the meantime, iBook can handle about one program at a time. I've always had a one-track mind anyway.
